Preliminary Exercise 2: Barthes Theory semiotic analysis of The Hunger Games Catching Fire Table 2 Week 9/19-9/23

Paragraph 1 The objective key concept of the lesson is to get a better understanding of denotations  and connotations . Also, to understand the literal meaning of something or a feeling/idea that is suggested by a word. Semiotics is the study of signs, symbols and signification. Roland Barthes was influential French philosopher and literary critic. His theory was that anything in culture can be a sign and send a specific message.  Paragraph 2 For example, media, fashion, art, photography, architecture and literature. Key terms of denota tion are indication or meaning. This means the literal meaning of something. For connotations it's the meaning, significance or association. Connotation is something suggested by a word or meaning. Lastly, for signs is signal,  memo or clue.   Intro Paragraph  The tree- The Druids (Celtic cultures) believed that trees or more specifically, oak trees have healing powers, and burning the wood would protect them from harm. Black cat- A black cat symbolizes wealth and fortune. There considered being very worthy and sensitive to their surroundings, which could be a sense of curiosity or even patience. Over centuries, there's spiritual myths. For Instance, spiritually a black cat means luck, fortune and wealth.  Second Paragraph  Red Roses-   Roses are considered "love or passion" because Romans would put roses in their bedrooms to symbolize love and beauty that Venus (a roman goddess) was known for. Also, in relationships a red rose can represent loyalty or commitment to a relationship. Reflection Paragraph In Conclusion, we analyzed the denotations and connotations of images. Such as, a tree, a red rose and a black cat.   This lesson was very significant.

                            The importance of studying Media Studies is to understand ourselves better and the things around us. Such as, why we watch Tv so much or use our phones so often. We use these devices so much simply because it entertains us. For Example. I use my phone for multiple hours in a day to watch movies and shows, text/call my friends/ friends or even to use social media! In Addition, it is engaging to people in my age because it targets teenagers' audience. Furthermore, 3 things I find interesting about Media Studies is first media studies includes other different things like mass communication, media language and many other things. Secondly, you get to learn more about film. Lastly, you notice things you never noticed before in films.  The type of media product I'll be documenting on my blog is my 2-minute opening film. Media studies to me is the study of media. Adding on, I also think media studies is analyzing and studying films and media forms. What I hope to get out of this experience, is a better understanding of how media studies work. Lastly, to also analyze films better.
